Episode 3: Dirty Jane Antiques & Five Wits Brewing

Where to Shop

In this episode, we crossed state lines to drive to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where Sammi used to live. Our first stop was the famous World’s Longest Yard Sale, an annual event that runs from Ohio to Alabama with thousands of vendors along the way. We will discuss this more in the future, but our favorite stop was Picker’s Field and the Lone Oak Community Center, both on Signal Mountain. We picked up some great glassware and prints.

Our second stop was Dirty Jane Antiques, another favorite further down the mountain. This well-organized shop has pennants, books, and midcentury furniture. And if that isn’t enough, we detoured to The Refindery, where on a previous visit I found a vintage school map. This time, we saw hardware and signage.

Where to Drink

On our way back from Signal Mountain, we stopped for a coffee at Sunnyside Cup, a very cute drive-through shop. Back downtown, we went to Five Wits Brewing, located in Market South, which was new since our last visit.

But the Southside has so many great places for a drink, including Pax Breu Ruim, a funky beer bar, HiFi Clyde’s Chattanooga, a dive with games and strong cocktails. Wanderlinger Brewing Company is also nearby.

There are also some great distilleries, including Chattanooga Whiskey Experimental Distillery and Gate 11 Distillery inside the Chattanooga Choo Choo.

Where to Eat

Flying Squirrel

I firmly believe that Chattanooga is one of the most underrated food cities around! Aretha Frankenstein’s is a popular breakfast spot known for its funky decor and massive pancakes. But go early as there’s usually a wait!

I loved the original location of Syrup and Eggs so I was glad to hear they’d moved to the Northshore. The menu focuses on breakfast but each dish is beautiful. I had a savory blue corn pancake with salsa and poached eggs!

On the Southside, Kenny’s is one of the best lunch spots in town. The menu has a little bit of everything, whether you’re in the mood for a Reuben or a breakfast burrito. We ate at Urban Stack during one of our first visits, where you can enjoy funky burgers or build your own.

Flying Squirrel is affiliated with the neighboring climber’s hostel and has a great beer menu as well as hand-cut fries and a fried chicken biscuit. Sit outside for views of the dog park next door.

Other Places to Shop

Wildflower
Wildflower

I’ve been to many farmers’ markets, but Chattanooga Farmer’s Market is one of the best! The sprawling market has fresh produce, prepared foods, and artisan goods. Go hungry and bring cash! Bleu Fox Cheese Shop is a good stop for charcuterie essentials, along with wine and beer.

Sammi lived near Wildflower Tea Shop and we went just about every time I visited. The shop has loose leaf tea to enjoy there or take for later, along with CBD bath bombs and other gifts. Locals Only is the best spot for souvenirs, including books, candles, and other goods.
